FOR ZOO, SANCTUARY & CONSERVATION EQUIDS

Presented by Touching Wild with Bonny Mealand

In collaboration with RZSS Highland Wildlife Park

Join Touching Wild with Bonny Mealand at the Highland Wildlife Park to explore award-winning approaches to equid care.

These immersive, hands-on workshops blend practical skill-building with the latest science and are designed specifically for professionals caring for unhandled, minimally handled, or free-living equids in zoo, sanctuary, or conservation environments.

I’m delighted to offer these two unique and complementary training opportunities. Grounded in welfare science and developed through years of real-world experience, these workshops will equip you to deliver safe and effective care to the equids you work with.

COURSE 1

Day 1-2

A Hands-On Workshop for Vets, Zoo Keepers, Welfare and Sanctuary Staff & Conservation Grazing Wardens

HIGHLAND WILDLIFE PARK
16 - 17 July 2025  |  Course fee: £220

The health and soundness of an equid are reflected in their feet. As a vet, zoo keeper, sanctuary carer, or conservation grazing warden, you are in a unique position to support hoof health through a “little and often” approach, helping the animals in your care stay comfortable, resilient, and well-adapted to their environment.

This practical, research-based workshop equips you with the core knowledge and hands-on skills to understand and maintain hoof health in non-domestic equids. By linking science with applied hoofcare, you’ll gain a holistic and welfare-focused approach that fits naturally into routine management.

What You’ll Learn:

  • Anatomy & function of the equid foot: structure and adaptations

  • Recognising healthy hooves: spotting early signs of dysfunction

  • Laminitis & metabolic disorders: causes, prevention, and risk management

  • Diet, environment, and movement: strategies to support hoof health naturally

  • Cadaver hoof trimming & dissection: internal anatomy, tools, and trimming techniques

This course focuses on what you need to know to keep healthy hooves healthy, equipping you to prevent problems and promote long-term soundness.

We’ll cover practical details, introduce key ideas, and give you a chance to ask questions and connect with others attending. A warm, informal way to feel prepared and welcomed.
